Introducing Ourselves

Pearl at Corrymore Lake

Well, here we go.

This is our first blog post, and we cannot tell you how excited we are to be publishing it. We’d like to use it to introduce ourselves as a family, explain who we are, what Nanny Goose’s Glamping is all about and what we are hoping to achieve with our new adventure.

We are Claire, Chris and our gorgeous daughter, Pearl (3), and the site on which our new glamping pods are located is also our home.

Claire is from right here in Mayo, from the village of Tonragee in Achill, Chris is from the UK, and we met in London where we were both working. Pearl was born in south London, and we spent the first eighteen months of her life living there in a succession of very small flats before travelling together to Achill at the end of 2022.

Pearl’s first home in south London

Nanny Goose was the name by which some people knew Claire’s mom. We think it’s both the perfect tribute to her and the ideal inspiration for the glamping experience we want to provide; if we can make your family’s holiday on Achill Island as warm, friendly, comfortable and welcoming as the home in which Claire grew up, we’ll have succeeded.

As we planned it, moving from London seemed very complicated but, in the end, it was really a very simple decision; the change of pace, the amazing environment, the beautiful hills and cliffs, the sea, the sand, the craic…and what a place for our daughter to grow up.

We know that Achill is just the most perfect place; that’s why we moved here. Whether you are planning on exploring the hiking trails and bog roads on foot, cycling through the hills, swimming or surfing in the sea, hitting the lake for the adventure sports or are just hoping to join in at one of the many pubs and restaurants, we know that a safe and calm place to stay at the end of the day will make your trip.

On the trail looking for faeries

The pods have been extensively tested through the winter (with all the wind and rain!) and spring by our friends and family and we are super excited to let you sleep in our cosy, comfy beds. You will wake up and from your front door see the stunning cliffs of Minaun in one direction, the peaks above Corrymore lake in another. The pods themselves are in the shadow of Slievemore; the giant, heather-covered mountain behind us.

We are a two-minute walk from the Cross Bar, and ideally located to get to the beaches at Keel, Dugort, Dookinella and Keem Bay. We can give you loads of ideas of what to do and where to go while you explore all these beautiful places and would be extremely happy to give you some hints for places to see outside of the most famous spots too.

This is our home, and we want it to be yours as you discover what makes Achill so special. Welcome one, and welcome all.

Claire, Chris and Pearl x
